從Motown到日本：日本Disco/Funk入面嘅黑人音樂
前言：
呢篇文章原本係由 Rocket Brown 喺 Reddit 度寫嘅（都可以睇吓佢個 blog 同埋佢啲周邊），標題叫「Black History in Japanese City Pop」，佢好爽快咁畀咗我哋許可，轉載喺呢個 blog 度。我哋做咗少少更新，希望大家鍾意！如果你都想投稿畀我哋個 blog，記得搵我哋喇！
我記得有一次，我介紹緊一位朋友聽日本 city-pop，於是就將我嘅 YouTube 頻道連結傳咗畀佢，希望佢會發現到啲自己鍾意嘅新音樂。我本來以為佢第一印象會係正面嘅，點知佢留咗個幾得意嘅留言，話呢班日本藝人根本就係抄美國音樂，再講深啲就係黑人音樂，我哋因住就傾埋呢個話題。一開始我都冇因為佢咁樣諗而嬲，因為文化挪用喺音樂界確實係一個真實嘅問題；我哋黑人社群有句說話係咁講嘅：「佢哋想要我哋嘅節奏，但係唔想要我哋嘅 blues」，呢句話都幾有道理。不過我有幸學到嘅一件事，就係有好多黑人音樂人喺日本流行音樂嘅發展史入面，扮演過非常重要嘅角色。呢篇文章嘅目的，就係想盡量將呢段文化交流記低。
1973 年 —— The Isley Brothers
The Isley Bros 嘅《3+3》（1973）
The Isley Bros. 係一隊嚟自俄亥俄州辛辛那提嘅美國 R&B／靈魂樂組合，喺 1950 年代初成立，由 O’Kelly Isley 帶領。1973 年 8 月 7 日，佢哋透過 Epic 唱片公司推出咗第十一張專輯《3+3》。啱啱好，Tatsurō Yamashita 嘅第一隊樂隊 Sugar Babe，都係喺同一年、差唔多同一時間成立嘅。事實上，Sugar Babe 得個唯一單曲《Down Town》，正正就係為咗致敬《3+3》專輯入面首金曲《If You Were There》而寫嘅，將 Isley Bros. 招牌嘅 R&B 音色，同嗰時日本聽眾熟悉嘅民謠搖滾風格融合埋一齊。
雖然 The Isley Bros 冇直接參與 Sugar Babe 呢首歌嘅創作，但呢件事都好能夠證明，非裔美國藝人對 city-pop 有幾大影響——尤其係 Tatsurō Yamashita 本人都承認自己係 Isley 兄弟嘅忠實粉絲，仲喺之後嘅歌，例如《Bomber》同《Silent Screamer》入面，重現咗佢哋嗰種勁爆嘅放克（funk）音色。
1977 年 —— Linda Carriere

呢個例子就啱啱相反，係日本藝人反過嚟影響咗黑人音樂，講到呢個，梗係非傳奇人物 Tatsurō Yamashita 莫屬——佢曾經受聘為非裔美國女歌手 Linda Carriere 寫歌，嗰陣時佢仲係迪斯可組合 Dynasty 嘅成員。
Tatsurō Yamashita 為 Linda 個人首張專輯寫咗兩首歌：開場曲《Up On His Luck》同《Love Celebration》。雖然嗰陣有出過一張試版碟（test pressing），但呢張專輯最後都冇完成過，於是山下達郎就喺自己 1978 年嘅專輯《Go Ahead!》入面，收錄埋自己版本嘅《Love Celebration》。
補充：Kimiko Kasai 都有自己翻唱版本嘅「Love Celebration」。
1979 年 —— Kimiko Kasai & Herbie Hancock
Kimiko Kasai 同 Herbie Hancock 合作專輯《Butterfly》（1979）
When people think of Herbie Handcock, people usually think of the 1980’s electronic hit “Rockit”, however prior to that he was a successful jazz musician. One album took him to Japan to work with chanteuse Kimiko Kasai’s (笠井紀美子), to create the 1979 album, Butterfly.
The album features a number of cover versions including renditions of Stevie Wonder’s “As” and a collection of Hancock originals including “I Thought It Was You”, “Tell Me A Bedtime Story” and the title track “Butterfly”.
1979 年 —— Ebonee Webb
Ebonee Webb – « Disco Otomisan » (1978)
Ebonee Webb was a Memphis funk band lead by vocalist Michael Winston and guitarist Thomas Brown. While they made very decent funk and soul songs in the early ’80s, they had a very strange debut in the late ‘70s. For whatever reason, these seven musicians from Memphis, Tennessee, went all the way to Japan to record, as it’s promoted on the album cover “ the most engaging debut album”, called Disco Otomisan, a strange compilation of disco songs composed to the melodies of Min’yō ( traditional Japanese folk music).
呢張專輯喺 1978 年喺日本推出，之後嘅續集專輯《Memphis Soul Meets Japanese Folk Songs》就喺 1979 年推出。

1980 年 —— Yellow Magic Orchestra 上咗 Soul Train
YMO 上咗電視節目「Soul Train」——左邊嗰位係 Ryuichi Sakamoto（1980）
In the ‘80s, Harry Hosono’s pioneering electronic group Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) were established as the hottest pop group in Japan, but the notoriety didn’t end in their home country.
呢集節目原本喺 1980 年 11 月 29 日播出，YMO 上咗 Soul Train。呢件事幫佢哋確立咗國際知名度，佢哋唔單止係第一隊非黑人樂隊上呢個節目，仲係第一隊、亦係唯一一隊上台嘅日本樂隊。面對住熱情嘅觀眾（入面仲有佢哋個經理人扮成刻板印象入面嗰種日本遊客），YMO 一開場就翻唱咗 Archie Bell & the Drells 1968 年經典 R&B funk 金曲「Tighten Up」，跟住仲同 Don Cornelius 本人做咗段幾尷尬但又幾搞笑嘅訪問，最後以佢哋自己嘅金曲 「Firecracker」作結。
1982 年 —— Tom Tom 84：Thomas Washington

Often credited as Tom Tom 84, Thomas Washingtion is an American pianist, arranger and producer, born: 1944 in Chicago, Illinois. Tom began his career training under the late James Mack while working at Brunswick Records, and since then has been producing some of the world’s most iconic artists since 1970, from the Chi-Lites, to Earth Wind & Fire, to Phil Collins.
However his work isn’t excluded to the US, as he’s produced music with a number of Japanese musicians as well. His earliest known work in Japan was producing Toshiki Kadomatsu’s ( 角松敏生 ) 2nd album, Weekend Fly To The Sun in 1982, alongside member of Earth Wind & Fire. He’s also arranged music for singer Junko Ohashi ( 大橋純子) on her 1982 album, Postcard Fantasy, as well as pop idol Meiko Nakahara (中原めいこ), for her 1985 single Gemini (ジェミニ).
1984 年 —— Stevie Wonder & Cindy

Cindy《Love Life》專輯（1986）
返返嚟講 Stevie Wonder：呢位畀人叫做「世界第八大奇蹟」嘅音樂人，1986 年仲親自幫日本 R&B 唱作歌手 Mayumi Yamamoto（山本真裕美）（藝名 Cindy）監製咗一張 city-pop 專輯《Love Life》。
1984 年 —— Chocolate Lips

Prior to her involvement in anime California Crisis, vocalist and keyboardist Miho Fujiwara (藤原美穂) had been doing her fair share of backing vocal work for some more famous singers. That was when saxophonist & producer Jimmy L. Weaver came to Japan and had a chance to listen to her at some live house.
傾傾吓，Chocolate Lips 就咁樣誕生咗，低音結他手 James Norwood 亦都因住加入。佢哋喺 1984 年推出咗第一張、亦都係唯一一張同名迪斯可專輯《Chocolate Lips》。雖然佢哋冇參與成張專輯嘅製作，但 Jimmie 同 James 都有為電影《California Crisis》原聲帶唱咗首歌「Streets Are Hot」，喺專輯度掛名做「Jimmie & Michael」。
補充：喺八神純子（Junko Yagami）嘅《Surprise》現場演出入面，都睇到 Jimmy Weaver 出現。
1984 年 —— Yogi Horton & Toshiki Kadomatsu
Yogi Horton 同 Toshiki Kadomatsu —— She’s My Lady（1987）
Lawrence「Yogi」Horton 係 80 年代其中一位最出色嘅 R&B 錄音室鼓手，同好多藝人合作過，由 Diana Ross 到 Luther Vandross 都有。佢仲同日本音樂人 Toshiki Kadomatsu 私交好好，仲做過佢好多作品嘅錄音室鼓手，包括 Toshiki 1984 年嘅單曲「Girl In The Box」、1985 年嘅專輯《Gold Digger》，同埋 1985 年嘅金曲《Hatsu Koi（First Love）》。
可惜嘅係，Yogi Horton 長期受躁鬱症困擾，喺 1987 年 6 月 8 日，喺紐約一場 Luther Vandross 演唱會表演完冇耐，就喺一間酒店 17 樓一躍而下，令人痛心咁結束咗自己嘅生命。為此，Toshiki Kadomatsu 喺 1987 年推出咗單曲《She’s My Lady》，用嚟紀念佢嘅一生。
1988 年 —— Joey McCoy 同 Omega Tribe

如果你係 Omega Tribe 嘅死忠歌迷，你多數要嘛鍾意 Kiyotaka Sugiyama（杉山清貴）時期，要嘛鍾意 1986 年由 Carlos Toshiki 領銜嗰個陣容。不過好少人講起嘅一位無名英雄，就係 Joey McCoy，佢加入樂隊之後，為好多歌曲擔正主唱。
佢最出名嘅作品，係 Omega Tribe 1988 年嘅金曲《Reiko》，佢將英文同日文部分都唱得完美無瑕。加入樂隊之前，Joey 已經喺 1987 年推出過一首日文單曲，叫《If You Say Yes》。

佢最後喺 1992 年推出咗自己嘅專輯《Summertime Memories》，收錄咗好多 Omega Tribe 單曲嘅英文翻唱版。
佢仲同其他 J-Pop 音樂人合作過，例如做過 Momoko Kikuchi 曇花一現嘅樂隊 RaMu 嘅結他手，同埋做過 ANRI 嘅和音歌手兼作曲人。Joey 仲同知名遊戲公司 Konami 嘅官方樂隊 Konami Kukeiha Club 合作過，參與咗佢哋恶魔城（Castlevania）主題專輯《Perfect Selection Dracula》嘅官方發行，為好多恶魔城歌曲嘅混音版本獻聲 rap（仲幾搞笑㖭）。
1989 年 —— Ray Parker Jr.

大部分人識 Ray Parker Jr.，都係因為佢寫咗《Ghostbusters（捉鬼敢死隊）》系列電影嘅主題曲，但其實佢作為錄音室樂手同作曲人，都有非常豐富嘅作品，仲為好多藝人（包括海外藝人）作過曲。
據我所知，Ray 最早參與日本音樂嘅經歷，係為 J-Rock 組合 Yosui Inoue（井上陽水）同 Anzen Chitai（安全地帯）1974 年嘅單曲「Yudachi」（夕立）做結他手。Ray 仲為好多 city-pop 藝人作詞作曲，包括 EPO 1982 年嘅單曲《Girl in Me》，同埋 R&B 歌手 Masayuki「Martin」Suzuki（鈴木雅之）1986 年首張金曲《Our Love is Special》同《Love Overtime》。
1992 年 —— Isaac Hayes

Masayuki Suzuki 其實得到過唔少知名黑人藝人幫手，一齊塑造咗佢嘅 R&B 音色。「南方靈魂之王」Isaac Hayes 本人，就試過喺 1991 年幫手為 Martin 寫咗另一首金曲《Come On In》。
